Sterex report on the American Electrolysis Association Annual Convention

The American Electrolysis Association Convention was held in New York recently over a period of four days starting at 7am to 6pm and with over 7 lectures of between 3- 4 hours each not forgetting the 12 exhibitors to visit and talk to it was a jam packed conference.

The American Electrology Association has always dedicated its purpose to educate and enhance the electrology world and the 2006 Annual Convention and Exhibitors Showcase presented some outstanding educators offering expertise and experience into their field of electrolysis.

Sterex Electrolysis International Limited always attend the Conference in support of their US market and to explore any new developments in the field of electrolysis.  The delegation from the UK included Laurie Cartmell MD of Skin by Sterex and Director of Sterex, Elaine Stoddart, Director of Training and PR for Sterex and Skin by Sterex and Martin Widdicombe Sterex Export Sales Manager for US and Overseas.  They were joined by Hazel Critchlow, Trainer for Sterex and Helen Graham, Chairman of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysists and Consultant Sterex Lecturer.

Other findings were of an area in the hair follicle just below the arrector pilli muscle.  This muscle is attached to an area called the ‘bulge area’ and thousands of nucleus in this area constantly divide.  The cells migrate down to the papilla and up to the epidermal area and generate new hair.  Electrolysis destroys all new cells generating from the bulge.  Other findings presented showed a laser beam, efficient on one side of a hair but not able to reach through to the other side and Clement pointed out that a hair could be positioned next to another underneath the skin and the treatment not be effective.  This theory was backed up with slides showing evidence of this claim.  In addition to this Clement  stated that laser destroys melanocytes and therefore pigmentation problems are not uncommon in laser epilation patients.

Mike Thompson PhD spoke on 'How to Create (or Sabotage!) a Healthy Work Environment'.  This morning lecture helped the delegates learn how to deal with pleasant, as well as difficult people, thereby enabling them to perform to their greatest potential.  The interactive workshop suggested some of the pitfalls to avoid and made practical suggestions to create the best environment for success.  Mike is not only a very experience speaker but is also an entertainer and where Mike goes so does his guitar so the audience were truly entertained and livened up by some popular songs and entertaining strumming!

This was followed by the international speaker and celebrity Naomi Tickle CPAC whose book on ‘Reading Faces’ has become a best seller.  Naomi has appeared on several TV chat shows including Parkinson, Sharon Osborne and the various breakfast shows.

Naomi’s workshop was aimed to give the delegates a new understanding of human behaviour and to help change the way we look at and treat our clients. This study, she argues, created a bond with the client and therefore loyal clients and more referrals.  It was extremely interesting to be analysed and quite amazing how accurate the results were. Angela Greco BS, an experienced presenter, instructor and teacher spoke on the latest AEA facts on Infection Control and Blood Borne Pathogens.  Angela is responsible for all the infection control lecturers provided by the Health Awareness Centre in New Jersey.

Rochelle Rice MA lecture was entitled ‘Self-Care for the Electrologist’.  Rochelle is the President of In Fitness & ‘In Health’ in New York City and author of ‘Real Fitness for Real Women’.  Popular on the rounds of TV programmes in the US including ABC World News and CBS her self care programme has been featured in the New York Times, the L Times, Time Magazine and Fit Magazine.  She is passionate about helping people and gave an inspiring, motivational and educational lecture.

Dr Jerry Graff MD and one of the foremost Dermatologist in his field gave a full and varied slide show consisting of a large number of slides featuring common and uncommon skin conditions and talked of how shape, distribution and even colour of skin lesions can help lead to recognising a problem.  Although it is not the electrologists place to diagnose, the electrologist does become with their advanced knowledge of skin and hair, an expert in this field and offer valuable assistance to both the patient and the physician.

Other lecturers included Bonnie McLaren a marketing expert ‘Building a Better Business’ and Andria Bingham RE CPE on Computers in the Electrology Office showing how the transition from paper to computer can improve patient care, service, office management and marketing opportunities in each practice.

“New York in the fall is just the best time”, said Elaine “and we managed time out to ‘do’ all the tourist bits including a Broadway Show.  I have to say that one of the highlights was in a restaurant in China Town where we suddenly realised that we were on a table next to Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick!"
